YNS re-train 80 Mentors/Trainers Regarding Positive Discipline

After successfully being implemented in two regencies (Jayapura and Sorong), UNICEF in cooperation with YNS (IGGRD), held a positive discipline training on January 16-28, 2017 for mentors/trainers in four regencies, namely Jayawijaya, Mimika, Biak, and Manokwari. The training took place at Sahid Hotel, Jayapura. 80 mentors/trainers in four regencies were facilitated to design positive discipline training and mentoring program for teachers in 20 schools assisted by UNICEF in the regencies. They were facilitated by 3 national trainers (YNS) and some local trainers (lecturers from the University of Cendrawasih and some school principals).

During the training process, mentors/trainers were encouraged to contextualized the principles of training discipline in accordance with local conditions and the schools they mentor. This contextualization is essential in order to make positive discipline more easily accepted by teachers and parents. One of the examples of this contextualization was the use of Mop (funny story of Papua) as a form of time-out in the process of conflict resolution in schools. With the use of mop, children’s emotions can be immediately lowered so that the dialogue process can be done.

In addition to understanding and contextualized of positive discipline’s implementation, mentors/trainers were also guided to arrange their own training plan which will be used to train the teachers. The aim of this process was to enable the mentors/trainers to design the training in accordance with the conditions of the schools they mentored/trained. The benefits of this approach can be seen from one participant’s comment, “This training is very helpful because we were trained to design a training program and invite us to contextualized the implementation of positive discipline in the field.” At the end of the training, mentors/trainers were committed to encourage the involvement of all parties (teachers, parents and community leaders) to implement positive discipline in schools.
